Legong, the Fan Dance

Legong is a classical Balinese dance usually performed by two female dancers. The dance tells a story of a princess. The word Legong, derived from a Balinese word Leg, which means flexible and the word Gong, somekind of traditional musical instrument. Therefore, we can say that Legong means a flexible movement based on the thump of the Gong sound.

Legong is a distinct dance. As an opening, there is usually one dancer act as a Condong, one role in the dancing. The dancers are equipped with a traditional hand fan, but not for Condong. Condong is the only character dancing with no fan.

The dance is usually accompanied by a traditional orchestra, gamelan. Just like a set of show, the Legong dance has a special arrangement of music. It is Gamelan Semar Pagulingan that is usually used along with the Legong dance.
